Relationship Therapists Licensed in California

This page is for people in California looking for online therapists who specialise in relationship issues. Use it if you want help with couples communication, conflict, affairs, blended families, or dating concerns. Compare each therapist’s approaches, whether they work with individuals, couples, or families, and any specialty areas like sex therapy or premarital counselling. A California licence covers the whole state, so being inside California is not a barrier to working with any therapist listed here. Read profiles for therapy style, focus areas, and who they typically work with to find a suitable match for your situation.

About relationship therapy in California

Everyone listed on this page holds a licence to practise in California and works online. That matters more than it sounds: a licence is issued by the state, not by a city, so a therapist is available to anyone in California regardless of how far away they are. Someone outside a major metro can work with a therapist whose books would otherwise be out of reach.

1,782 therapists match this page, all of whom name relationship among the areas they work with. Fifteen are shown above. The list changes between pages, so it is worth looking at more than one if none of these feels like a fit.

What to compare

  • Credential. LMFT, LCSW and LPCC are different training routes to the same licensed practice. None outranks the others; they shape emphasis rather than quality.
  • Years in practice. Shown for every therapist here. More experience is not automatically better, but it is a fair proxy for how much of a given problem someone has seen.
  • What else they work with. A therapist whose other focus areas overlap with your situation is usually a better starting point than one whose listed areas stop at the single thing you searched for.
  • Approach. CBT, psychodynamic, solution-focused and the rest describe how sessions tend to run. If you have tried therapy before and it did not suit you, changing approach is often more useful than changing therapist.
  • Language. Shown where a therapist offers sessions in more than English.

How online sessions work

Sessions run by video or by messaging, arranged through our partner platform rather than booked directly with the therapist. There is no travel and no waiting room, which for most people is the difference between starting and not starting. Pricing is set by the platform and shown before you commit.

Common questions

Can a therapist licensed in California help with couple work for partners in different cities within the state?

Yes. A California licence covers the whole state, so therapists here can work with partners who live in different California cities. Check each therapist’s profile to confirm they offer couples therapy online and whether they accept two clients from separate locations. Also look at whether they list experience with long-distance or digital relationship work.

What models or approaches should I look for when I want help with relationship issues?

Look for therapists who list specific approaches used in relationship work, such as Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Gottman Method, Imago, or systemic/couples therapy. Profiles often note whether they integrate individual therapy with couple sessions, focus on communication skills, trauma-informed care, or sexual therapy. Choose a therapist whose methods match the kind of change you want.

How do I know if a therapist works with my particular relationship situation?

Check the therapist’s stated focus areas and populations served. Many profiles indicate experience with affairs, mixed-orientation relationships, polyamory, co-parenting after separation, or premarital counselling. If a profile doesn’t mention your situation, contact the therapist to ask directly about their experience and whether they accept new clients with your specific needs.
